Ask Kevin: Keeping warm
23 Jan '07 from Kevin Contreras
I found your show by accident and started watching. Am now scheduling you as a definite watch weekly. Fabulous show!!! Would a straw bale house work in the remote area in northern eastern most part of Washington State? We have snow for at least three sometimes four months at a time. Temps get down to -20?F but not for more than a week or two in Feb. Can be up to 100?F for a few weeks in late July through Aug. One more ? What is the “R” factor of bales, the “R” factor of the blue jean insulation?
Fascinating!!!!!!
Ms. Sam Y
Dear Ms. Y:
Straw bales are perfect for where you live. The R value of a bale is about 45. It’s like living in a thermos. Our walls are 30 inches thick and so comforting. Something else you’d love is radiant floor heating. The blue jean insulation can vary in R values, based on the thickness. Our series will have loads of information about all of these things, so keep watching. Thanks for being interested,
Kevin

Blue Jean Recycling
Hello, my husband was watching the program and my ear perked up when I heard “blue jean insulation.” I work at California Integrated Waste Management Board and assist local jurisdictions to divert waste from landfills by promoting green building concepts, buying recycling content products etc..
We visited a prison lately and were asked where they could send their old jeans/textile. “Blue Jean insulation” would be a perfect solution (if they can find a taker in CA). Is it possible for you to let me know the contact for the insulation manufacturing company in Arizona? I really appreciate it!
