Ask Kevin: Help is on its way
27 Jan '07 from Kevin Contreras
Dear Kevin,
Is there an association of green architects, or a sub-specialty of architecture that specializes in green residential construction?
Do you have any recommendations for locating a green architect?
P. MacRae
Dear P.:
Glad you asked. We’re growing our own network of resources here at buildinggreentv.com to help connect viewers with products and services, but in the meantime, here are several great service directories out there, including greenbuildingblocks.com, greenbuilder.com, and oikos.com.
And maybe your fellow Ask Kevin readers will be so kind as to leave additional suggestions in the comments section of this post.
Kevin

Where to start
Hi Kevin,
there are a huge number of publications and resources of all types available now for “green builders”. One group that’s been very active in this area for a long time is the Rocky Mt. Institute, www.rmi.org, [which published exactly what was asked for above in 1992: Robert Sardinsky’s “The Efficient House Sourcebook”]! RMI has several current books and CD-ROMs on “Buildings and Land” available at their online bookstore.
Extensive resource listings are also found in recent books by Daniel Chiras, such as his 2004 “The New Ecological Home” and others. Really, if anyone starts to look around, they will find so many “resources” their only problem will be ‘where do I start’.
Green Building resources
Dear Kevin,
I too am very interested in collecting a list of Green Building resources regarding everything from “Architects & Builders to Suppliers and Educators” - and their websites, books, publications, and contact info (perhaps you could compile an “Annual Green Building Resource Directory” and sell it for $20 dollars or something ?).
I have been waiting nearly 25 years for a show like yours to appear on television. I can’t tell you how much I and my family appreciate all the efforts of you and your staff.
THANKS, from myself and your many fans in Michigan
US Green Building Council
A good place to start looking would be the US Green Building Council, at www.usgbc.org. Ideally, you will need both a green architect and a green contractor.
Thanks!
Seth, Chris and Alex,
Thanks for your comments. When I started this endeavor three years ago there were very few, but now there is a plethora of websites and publications to start your exploration. the USGBC and RMI are great organizations and we are working at compiling a comprehensive Green Building Resource Directory that everyone can have for free.
Thanks guys,
Kevin
