Ask Kevin: Pot ash vs. fly ash
12 Feb '07 from Kevin Contreras
Kevin,
Is that pot or fly ash that you used in the concrete? Years ago I heard that about a 30 percent mixture waterproofed the concrete. What are the advantages of using ash? Why is it a green choice?
Thanks,
Gary
Gary,
This document will tell you everything you need to know about fly ash concrete.
Kevin

Very well written article.
Very well written article. It seems to be a “no brainer” that everyone should be using flyash in concrete, but my experience is that it’s rarely done here in the US. (Even in the Salt Lake area where Headwaters has its corporate headquarters and coal is a primary product in the production of electricity.)
Any known problems or reactions with PEX used for radiant heating lines?
PEX
Bill,
I sure hope ther is no reaction with the PEX. I am assured there is not. Like many green materials, it’s all a matter of awareness. When individuals request more things like higher flyash content concrete suppliers start meeting the demand.
Happy building,
Kevin
