Natural Clay Plaster over Adobe / Earth Block

This is natural clay plaster over compressed earth block, I left a small amount of block showing. This brown coat is a mixture of 1 part straw, 1 part clay, 2 parts sand... ad water makes it's own sauce. It is easily applied with a mud trowel and then smoothed with a wood float, however it is very labor intensive, but a lot of fun. You can cover it with a natural clay plaster color coat, clay paint or leave it raw.

We applied this plaster mixture over raw compressed adobe / earth block, as well as drywall that we primed with a BBS plater primer. we then used the air hose to blow sand on the freshly primed surface and allowed it to dry. This Natural Clay Plaster over Adobe / Earth Blockcreates great grab for the fresh plaster coat and increased production. Solstice Develoment Group www.SolsticeDev.com

Question

Can this kind of mixture be used for exteriors?

Will this type of coating

Will this type of coating will make the house more cooler during summer time or just to decorate the house ? The wall surface will be look like more porous which mean can it absorb more moisture compare to the normal wall ?

Natural Clay

This is amazing and so clean, as all of our environments should be. Labor aside, does any one have figures on how much less expensive this method of construction is per square foot?

clay

It looks very nice. Are those the same ingredients in American Clay's product? How would you add color?

natural clay plaster

Thanks for your interest. You would ad a color coat, by misting the walls with water and then troweling the color over the brown coat. This is a brown coat that you could ad American products over. They have great products... however their products can be pricey. If you can find someone locally that uses a proprietary mix I would ask them to mix for you. You will save on shipping and would most likely have hands on help.

natural plaster

The colors are depend from

The colors are depend from what place you brought those earth. Yes, it can have moister more than a normal wall but in the other hand it can release the moister faster than the normal wall too. "Breath-wall" warm in winter, cool in summer.

In this case, you may need to re-coat the wall every 2-5 years (depends). The colors quite have a limit, you can't have too many colors but it cheap! cheaper than any natural plaster : you can dig your front yard to do this too!

Anyway I would recommend to have natural lime plasters instead because it can live longer than this one ,and there're many colors you can mix it yourself. But the natural lime plaster would take long time because you need to put the water in a tank mix with lime. Wait for at least a month or as log as possible you can do (1 year? yes if you can - but normally we would use 3 months old). Then you have to "winnow" (I really don't know the words, sorry) the plaster. Now you mix it with the "powder colors" and smooth sand. Then coat the wall. It's another breathable wall too.
