Ask Kevin: Off the grid
27 Feb '07 from Kevin Contreras
My husband and I would like information on windmills, solar panels, and reusing water. How to build a house that runs itself? We have access to water.
If you could help answer any or all of these questions I would appreciate it.
Natalie
Dear Natalie,
You are talking about living “off the grid.” That is, without tapping into any municipal services. If you’re thinking about going off-grid, you might enjoy this article from Home Energy Magazine, which is a great place to start your research.
Stay in touch and let us know what you build!
Regards,
Kevin

hi there
I just watched your program on PBS. You americans are truly damn. You, said how green and wonderful your windows made of salvaged wood were, but they came from Australia. Idiot!!! It is not more evironmentaly frindly to bring wood from Australia than use some beautiful raw wood from North American. Green building? how can such a huge house be consider a green building. Out of an hurban center were the owners drive an SUV around. Did you know that the footage square of houses has doble since 1970? and the sice of families is half. going green is about a life style, not about a new cool thing. Americans.... what a curse for the planet!!!
thank you
