I live in north Idaho. We are building a 30'X50' shop now. Next year we are planning to build a home on ten acres that is mostly wooded. With energy costs increasing as they are we want to build an energy efficient home. I am courious about straw. We want to have a basement and aren't sure how that would be done with straw. I would also like to incorporate photovoltaic system to supliment our electrical needs. I am 67 years old and have retired completely.

Sincerly Thomas J. Abel

Hello Thomas:

Straw bale construction is a great way to build a healthy and energy efficient home.
It is important that for this type of structure you are consulted by a very experienced straw bale builder. Make no mistake, being not 100% knowledgeable in what you are doing, you could end up with unexpected surprises. I know, because I was involved in straw bale construction, and still will be in the future. I leave the building of the straw bale walls to the expert with an excellent reputation, and very satisfied customers.

My advise, make sure you partner up with the right person to do the job. If you do, you will be very pleased with your straw bale home. Good luck and all the best. Wolf
