Largest Urban Farming Crop Wall Coming in June 2009

Green Living Technologies and Urban Farming, bring 1000+ sf of Edible Crops to Rochester NY...

April 3, 2009
,Rochester NY, Lead by GLT Chief Operating Officer Diane DiGregorio, the team of Green Living Technologies, Rochester City Green Leader Jerdine Johnson, Teen Court representative Cookie Walter and the City Food Bank will announce next week the host of the largest Urban Farming Vertical Food Chain project to date. The Food Chain is a program that was developed by Urban Farming (www.urbanfarming.com), Robin Osler (www.eoarch.com) and Green Living Technologies (www.agreenroof.com) to provide edible food grown in urban areas for the homeless.....on the walls. With the help of the Los Angeles pilot project the program has taken on more meaning. It actually starts by teaching how to plant the seeds, caring for them and nurturing them to grow. Once mature enough the specially designed panels are hung on the wall. The work and maintenance are conducted by the benefactors and the education is passed from generation to generation. The seeds are collected for next years crops and during the non-growing season there is a 10 -12 week unit plan around green roofs and green walls. Co-Sponsored by local celebrities Brenna Hartmann (The Fixie Chick) and Len Moscowitz (Home and Yard Radio) the plan is to install various "links" of the edible crop wall chain to provide an opportunity for various communities within the city to experience the empowerment and joy these food wall bring to the neighborhoods. "We have implemented this program in Los Angeles and NYC with results that were unmeasurable, it only makes sense that we have a signature Food Chain Wall right here in Rochester", GLT CEO and The Green Wall Editor George Irwin. In the non-growing season the wall will be used for class room activities and a unit plan developed by George Irwin (also a licensed K-12 teacher) will be part of the program. The program will be owned by the Rochester Teen Court to help first time offenders get involved. "This program will help almost 100 young people by teaching them a green job skill, provide opportunities for learned social skills, responsibility, empowerment, foster a sense of community and there is food as a by product that gets donated to the local food bank to help the homeless". (Diane DiGregorio) The green walls and educational materials will be part of the GLT commitment to the Urban Farming Program but the organization is still seeking sponsor funding to help pay for the decorative sponsor boxes that also house the tools needed to maintain the walls. Wheres Your Green Job?

30+ New GLT Agents / Installers and 150+ up and coming up.....Where is your Green Job?

GLT School for the 2009 year kicked off with 32 attendees at the NYC Growing Facility owned by GLT lead growers Plant Connection. The class consisted of mainly existing businesses from NY with leaders from Chicago and Philadelphia coming to attend. The GLT school is one of two parts to becoming GLT certified agent and installer. The school is a day and a half of product training, maintenance, plants, applications, sales and quoting. This portion is minimal hands with little authentic installation experience. The second portion of the training consists of an authentic installation on a real green roof or wall. Designed so the installer in training gets PAID to install they also are supervised by a GLT supervisor who eventually has to sign off on the project, there is no better way to learn than on the job. The course is developed by GLT CEO and licensed teacher George Irwin who is also known as the Green Wall Editor. With the assistance of the GLT network (Plant Connections, GLT Global Grower, Parker Plants for Maintenance) the students get a real authentic perspective of what really goes into a green roof and a green wall. So many times these same people show up to another product training and instead of being trained they pay a fee and get a 2 hour demo and are told to go out and sell. The GLT system of training dictates that everyone of its clients will be serviced by a highly trained installer or agent. Even our agents (Selling agents / non installers) have to be trained so that when they converse with a client they are fully comprehensive.COMING NEXT VANCOUVER

The FAQ ......
(Send us your question about Green Roofs or Green Walls and we may feature it in our news letter and may become part of the next column by "The Green Wall Editor" at www.greenroofs.com)

Q. "All the pictures I see of green roofs are always in the height of bloom or in the warm regions of the US. I live where we get lots of snow and temperatures drop below freezing, What does the green roof or green wall look like in the winter"?.... (Sandy, Rutland VT)

A. Both green roofs and walls when constructed properly, account for the correct vegetation for the geographic area and are maintained as specified will perform throughout the winter. Not only do the GLT Green Roof systems  perform they add beauty, color and texture to an otherwise barren landscape.

Don't be fooled, not all systems are created equal. If you utilize the wrong plant in relation to the depth of the media the plant will not survive the winter. This is more true with green walls. This is exactly why we have a 3", 4" and 6" depths for a variety of plants. There is no such thing as a standard mix of plants to choose from for your green walls. If someone hands you a list without consulting with you about the lighting, elevation, depth and anticipated expectation....buyer beware.

Storm water that is....

We had the chance in the past to show the storm water cleanliness after it was filtered through the Green Living Roof Panels. Here are some additional authentic pictures taken just last Friday. The Green Living Roof Panels are a long term solution and a short term expense. Pre-vegetated delivered mature and installed immediately the benefits are instant. The remaining data on this roof will be held until I present it to the "Nonpoint Source Pollution Conference" Click here for the link If you need immediate information for a project please feel free to contact us....the Green Living Roof panel is less than 15 lbs per square foot saturated and can hold up to 8 gallons of water in a 10.5 square foot section!

GLT SCHOOL:

Most may not know this but Green Living Technologies CEO George Irwin is also a certified teacher. Education has played a roll in the success of GLT. Our philosophy is working with our installers and reps very closely like a living classroom. Here's the facts, not everyone can learn in a controlled classroom, in fact we will not accept our installers being certified without having real authentic hands on experience. It is not the same unless you learn on a real project. No one installer is certified until a GLT supervisor signs off on an actual installation without the help of GLT. Our growth and expansion has been controlled, the people we have as our installers, agents and maintenance technicians are 100% the best in the industry. We work with them personally, teaching hands on. It is not fair to the agent that we sit you in a 4 day class and say good luck out there. We don't just accept anyone. This is why everyone in the GLT organization, hands on or not, has to attend GLT School. Everyone has to know our systems and how they are installed.

K-12 Green Roof and Green Wall Unit Plan and The Harley School (Rochester NY)

One of the very best things about our company is they way we give back to society. We have a hands on approach with the population we are trying to impact. This means not just educating architects but students, teachers and others in our society. Licensed teacher George Irwin, aka "The Green Wall Editor" and CEO of Green Living Technologies has developed a 9 week unit plan that can be tailored for Kindergarten through college. The current class meets for 2 hours a week as the unit takes the students through the education and hands on approach to green roofs and green walls. Complete with a 95 page teachers guide to complement the 75 page student handbook, rubrics and assessment materials, the unit was designed around the National Learning Standards and provides plenty of curriculum interaction including math, science, social studies and writing. At the end of the unit the students have to prepare a persuasive argument complete with facts and research, present it to the group to decide what project their class will install for an additional 3-4 week hands on lab. The same presentation is graded by their peers using the provided rubric. The students will conduct an installation of a green roof or green wall and perform basic data collection or prepare an edible garden as part of the Urban Farming Food Chain. The pilot program goes into effect late March at the Harley School in Rochester NY, upon revisions the Unit Plan will be available to the public.

Rochester Institute of Technology and Green Living Technologies....

have agreed to conduct some of the first technical data around green living walls. Late March, Josh Goldwitz, Professor and Undergraduate Coordinator Environmental Management & Safety will oversee a 9 month study involving the Green Living Wall systems. Without disclosing the specifics it will be ground breaking research, the first of its kind to be available specifically around green living walls.

Live Global Satellite feed from 6 am - 12 pm April 16th is the date for a Campbell's soup edible crop wall to be part of the Urban Farming Food Chain in collaboration with Green Living™ Technologies and the Green Living™ Wall. Live from Harlem in New York City. "This project really demonstrates the next step for the

Green Roofs in 4 Easy Steps

Im usually know to post about green wall technologies as the Green Wall Editor but it just so happens we also manufacturer 3 green roof products and felt obligated to comment. I wrote a few weeks ago about buyers beware of "Green Consultants", (Green Caution Flag) Im not one to say "I told you so"....here is a good example. Ive seen the post about a green roof that was explicitly showing the install process in California. Sadly Im not aware of a single system that starts out with an asphalt waterproofing. (I should of premised the fact from the pics it looks as if its an asphalt product).......than a plastic layer on top....one comment referred to condensation....it should be interesting if they have to pull the roof due to water leaking from the interior ceiling. The point Im trying to really make is that the green roof that was installed looks great but there was an easier and proper way....(Proper meaning the plastic is not a good idea) so easy a homeowner could of done this small project with one other person in a half of a day. With either the Green Living Roof Panels, or the Green Living Roof Trays.....Either system on such a small roof would of been economical and extremely functional.

Here are your options, the Green Living Roof Tray and the Green Living Roof Panel. The Trays were designed to be installed by one person. The standard 4" depth comes with 2 layers of water retention, handles and complete with 3.5" of growing media. They can be planted on site or pre-vegetated and delivered in a mature form. Here is the simplicity........You sweep your roof membrane, install protection fabric and install your Green Living Roof Trays, the hardest part is getting them to the roof. No edge details and 1/3 rd the labor. The trays can retain up to 4.3 gallons of water in a 3.5 sf section........they are also available in 6" and 8" depths. These are the only trays available that can be adjusted to retain more or less storm water based on your roof load capacity.

Both systems have taken all the key layers of a green roof and completed a simple to install modular system. The panels interlock and will require ballast on the edge unlike the tray system but can retain up to 8 gallons of water in a 10.5 sf section.

Both standard systems as mentioned with full saturation only weigh 15 lbs . per sf! (Below is the Green Living Roof Panels being Pre-Grown for the Highline and Shea Stadium in NYC)

Step 2 Protection Fabric

Step 3 Install Green Living Roof Panels

Overall the point I am trying to make it, again, make sure your green roof consultant has the education and experience so that you dont have a failure and have a green roof that makes economical and functional sense.

The Green Wall Rental Market

Green Wall Rental? Yes, the concept was developed with the original freestanding Green Living Show Wall we made for last year’s Panegea Lexus event.

The idea actually came from the client. They wanted to have the wall as a backdrop but didn't want to own it and asked if they could lease it from us. The idea was something that sat on the back burner for the last few months as we developed other products like the column wall and the partition wall. The Column wall we made specifically for a green gala event in 07 that grew wheat grass and other herbs while the first partition wall was the concept to find a way to create more pleasant office cubicles.

Green Living Column Wall Green Living Partitian Wall

The latest partition wall consists of 160 easy to replace plants that can be left in a standard 6" pot and simply inserted into the wall. This version was designed specifically for the temporary seasonal display and can be supplemented in between seasons with easy to care for plants like pothos or others. Complete with lighting for a dramatic effect the Green Living Partition wall is complete with an automatic drip irrigation system feed by a water reservoir built into the bottom of the stand. Below is a holiday display at the Canandaigua National Bank in Rochester NY.

If your a landscape contractor doing holiday lighting why not add an interchangeable wall for rent. This unit will be fitted with cut roses for Valentine’s Day, and then pothos going into spring look for forced bulbs and then summer annuals mixed with mint for a fragrant summer smell. Come fall mums and before you know it we are back to the festive holiday. Indoor plant maintenance companies always rent plants for occasions. This is also an opportunity to rent this unit or similar for weddings, events and other parties. Why rent? Usually the company you rent it from does 100% of the maintenance and plant replacement. You can however have us manufacture your logo that would insert in the wall being surrounded by plants. I can’t tell you how many of the banks clients ask if it is real. Add to your collection,  a green wedding complete with rented Green Living Walls, centerpieces and even a custom Green Living Desk Top as a parting gift for your guests. Worried about not being environmentally friendly? Don't, our products are 100% recyclable and do not lose any of its functional properties during the process. It is 100% reusable.

Think about your next rental.....for more visit www.agreenroof.com

GLT is Hawaiian Green and Providing Homes for Beneficial Insects

Green Living Technologies agent and distributor 1st Look Exteriors (Maui) was recently featured on KITV news, Hawaii. The wall is a piece of art no question about it, great job Greg (Lee). It was very cool to listen to the news cast and have Greg be recognized for more than a great looking product install. I also author the Green Wall column for the home page www.greenroofs.com as the Green Wall Editor. One of the columns I wrote was about green walls titled "Outer Beauty, Inner Function". This was a great example of an aesthetically beautiful project also being recognized, although a mention, as being beneficial to the environment. One of the specifics included providing a place for native insects. To view the video click on http://www.kitv.com/video/18314669/index.html
