Green Building Initiative

The mission of the Green Building Initiative (GBI) is to accelerate the adoption of building practices that result in energy-efficient, healthier and environmentally sustainable buildings by promoting credible and practical green building approaches for residential and commercial construction.

The GBI is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) public charity and was founded in 2003, initially to facilitate the adoption of the National Association of Home Builders Model Green Home guidelines for residential construction. These guidelines, developed through an inclusive and rigorous process, are fast becoming the accepted approach for residential green building nationwide.

In addition to our work with the NAHB, we also offer systems to facilitate the sustainable design, development and maintenance of commercial buildings. Green Globes–widely used in Canada–was brought to the U.S. market by GBI. It is a portfolio of interactive, Web-based design and building performance tools that enable designers to evaluate environmental strategies for their buildings and achieve ratings that are verified by an independent third-party.
