Every Skatepark that Spectrum design/builds reflects pure soul, flowing energy and devotion to skateboarding through a dedication to provide fellow skateboarders the highest caliber skatepark possible for each municipality’s unique situation and budget. Spectrum is unique in its field for the following environmental factors.
Ecological Responsibility Spectrum is the only skatepark building firm to take a pro-active stance towards preserving the environment. Actions implemented thus far are: -use of “Eco-Smart” concrete. The production of cement powder is one of the most significant greenhouse gas (specifically CO2’s) producers on the planet. For example in the Greater Vancouver Regional District, cement production is currently responsible for approximately 50% of industrial CO2 emissions, or 13% of the total CO2 emissions in the GVRD. Eco-Smart concrete (http://www.ecosmartconcrete.com/index.cfm) uses a waste product (fly ash) to replace significant quantities of cement powder in the concrete mix -allowing storm/drainage water back into the earth & natural cycles, rather than into sewers, by promoting surface/daylight drainage and infiltration basins -promoting planting right within the skatepark itself / reducing the concrete footprint -instituting a “carbon credit” to reduce the carbon impact of flights taken by company staff -specifying site furnishings (benches etc.) made from recycled materials -an initiative/challenge with their Engineering team to always look for ways to reduce material consumption, and to keep on the lookout for the latest environmentally sound materials & products -currently investigating a new product that replaces galvanizing, thus reducing lead consumption as well as researching a new type of concrete: photo catalytic concrete, a new Italian technology, which, in the presence of sunlight, breaks down pollutants including carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, and benzene into less harmful compounds such as water and carbon dioxide.
