Green alternative to solvent-based mastic?

Hi Kevin,

I am looking for a safe alternative to a solvent-based mastic for setting tile.

This will be used in the backsplash and possibly bathtub tiles. Any ideas?

thanks,
mike

Solvent based mastic alternative....hmmm

Hey Mike,

Great question, one in which we would all like to know. Unfortunately, the major manufacturers, Mapei, Laticrete, & Custom Building Products, have not unveiled a green mastic.

Here's an idea, go back a few generations and use an old formula of sand. lime, and water (check old plaster recipies). Buy what you need, mix up and spread on the wall like mastic. Most tile is held by cohesive forces, therefore the air-lock function of setting tile should suffice. Be sure to "scratch" up the surface of what you are bonding the tile to. This will aid in "keying" in the mortor mix to the wall.

Good luck!
