I just noticed that Sharper Image is having a big sale on their ion air filters. I was tempted to make an impulse buy, but I have heard both good and bad things about ion systems. Anyone know what is the best way to clean the air in my 1800 square foot house? PS: I have carpet everywhere, as it's a rental.

ozone
please look carefully into ozone emissions from ionic air purifiers, which are harmful to your health. i think most people are recommending HEPA air cleaners instead...
Air Filter Systems
Try www.airvantage.net Unit provides clean air to entire house, does not produce ozone, about $200.
Have a look at AustinAir...
You might have a look at the AustinAir Healthmate series:

I have a Healthmate in my office, and a Healthmate Junior in the bedroom at home. The AustinAir filters are quite a bit more industrial-looking than some other, more expensive filters, but they are bomb-proof and work superbly. The four-stage filters last five years.
At bit off subject, but living in a rental with carpeting, the best single thing you can do to improve IAQ is remove your shoes at the door. Then, vacuum the carpeting with a HEPA vacuum with a Dirt-FInder (I think they call them--Hoover makes one--it senses when the vacuum is no longer picking up dust.) You may have to go over the same spot many times before you'll get the signal. This kernel of advice, by the way, comes courtesy of John Roberts, a.k.a. "Doctor Dust" of Engineering Plus here in the Seattle area.

ion air cleaners
ion machines attract the dirt in the air. Without a filter where does the dirt go? Well, the one I had on a bookshelf years ago put all that dirt on the wall behind the machine. I didn't realize it was happening until the wall color changed significantly. Then it had to be repainted. Maybe they have improved, but I would find out before investing in one.
Air Filters
You should take a look at the Swiss IQAir filter. I'm air filter PICKY and we have their portable unit which cleans up to 1000 sq. ft. and is great at removing ultra fine airborne particles, viruses, VOCs, etc. without the use of ions or ozone. On high speed of 6 the filter will clear a room in 30 minutes. For normal daily use we keep ours on level 3. They have a video on their website at http://www.iqair.us/
Thanks, Krista
I am checking out the IQ. I did spring for one of the small sharper image units already for the bathroom, where it's doing a noble job of getting rid of the catbox odor.
