There is a growing awareness in the public about terms such as SHGC and Visible Light Transmission as they relate to windows and doors. You must start with understanding glass when you evaluate windows and doors because glass is the critical component in determining the ultimate performance of the window or door.
Solar Heat Gain, measured by the SHGC, is a more critical measure in Climate Zones 1,2 and 3. Once you move into Climate Zone 4 then you need to start looking more at u-value. However, you must not look at these values in a vacuum. SHGC can affect daylighting and thus impact lighting demands etc.. By overshooting on one of these values you may actually have a negative impact on the overall energy efficiency of the home.
This article will explaing this in more depth than I can here. SHGC, Visible Light Transmission, Daylighting and U-Values
