Framing & Roofing

Kevin lives in earthquake country, where building codes are stringent. He finds a lot of green benefits in choosing steel framing for his straw bale house.

second floor deck

Kevin,
The structural support for the second floor is steel, but what did you use for the second floor deck material? What are green options for decking?
Thanks
Brandon

What did you use under the standing seam metal roof for decking?

framing

Steel is strong, but the energy used in producing steel is much greater than engineered lumber. Carbon emmissions from the production of the steel adds considerably to global warming compared with wood based products. And, the use of steel in the interior framing is certainly more of the same and has little to do with termite abatement. I'd love to hear your comments.

Good point

JT,

Good point. I addressed this concern in a previous answer. See it here. I'll build single story and use a wood post and beam frame next time.

Thanks for writing,
Kevin
