Smelly straw?

Another interesting question from one of our readers:
This is very funny but when I told one of my very pessimistic friends that I had decided that I wanted to build a strawbale home she replied, "Don't those homes smell bad? You know because they're all earthy." I didn't know quite what to say to her. "I'm not sure," I said. "I assume they can't smell that bad." Am I right? Does your new strawbale home smell bad?
I hope not. My husband has allergies to hay. So I assume because all of the hay is covered in earthenware plaster that it wouldn't be a problem. Hopefully, you don't find this question too silly because I'm curious to know.
Thank you,

Adrianne M.

"The bales are encapsulated in plaster so there is no evidence of any straw, except where one decides to add a “Truth Window” to show off the interior of the wall. Even if the walls were left un-plastered, allergies are caused by pollens and dust and not by the fibrous shafts that once contained grain."
