Hello,
I am a teacher at a school in Toronto and the students have started a school-wide program to green the school. One of the projects they are keen to pursue is building a large green wall. While the principle of the wall is easy to research, the name of the material the plants are to be set in is not so easy to find. We have looked around and have not had any success in finding what the best media is to set the plant roots in- does anyone know what the fibrous material is?
Thanks in advance,
Dr. Seth Halvorson

Green Wall Material
Hi Seth,
Sounds like a great school project! Try getting in touch with Dr. Mankiewicz of the Gaia Institute in the Bronx. Here is his contact info:

I recently read an article, in either Dwell, EcoStructure Magazine, or something else similar about a living interior wall, but I can't remember where! If I find it, I will let you know...
Best of luck to you, and post pics when you're through!

green wall media
Dr. Halvorson,
On your site I see you mentioned ELT, I am the only US based trainer for AIA accredited Green Walls 101 for Green Roofs for Healthy Cities, I know the majority of all the green wall systems in depth. The ELT panels use Miricle Grow with moisture control right from Home Depot or Lowes home centers. Our company is the only US media based green wall manufacturer, we have our own mix of growing media that we do not sell without our system, sorry I cant revel the recipe it has become a trade secret. (See my latest article on the cover of www.greenroofs.com) I urge you to look at the avaiable options, not to say the ELT system wont work for some applications, our system has large 4x6 cells that allow for free drainage and unlimited root migration preventing root rot and root bound plants. Our system is also a standard 3" - 6" depth without adding extensions. Available in standard aluminum or optional stainless, we can also custom color and laser engrave portions of the wall with logos etc....You may also want to contenplate a free standing demo on casters (attached pic is a stainless steel version that was used for a holiday display at the Toronto Botanical Society) Hope this was of some help if you have any questions please feel free to contact me at any time.
