It's a date!

It's official, Building Green will be available for airing by local PBS affiliates June 5th. Now you can join host Kevin Contreras and follow along as he builds his Santa Barbara dream house--out of straw. And steel. And fly ash. And old blue jeans. Between episodes, you can follow up right here, where you'll find loads of detailed information, links and expert advice in our Workshops to help you learn more about building green in your own neighborhood.

For a preview of what's to come visit our video archive, where you can watch the first segment of Episode One, and browse clips from the first six episodes in the series, and to learn about local air dates as soon as we do, sign up for our newsletter and we'll let you know when our station finder feature goes live.

Size of home

Hello,
The photo of your home appears quite large. What is the total square footage? In all the reading that I have done, the first rule of green building is to start small. Perhaps you have a very large family and need the space for many kids but the bigger the house, the more overall resources it uses. Any rule of thumb you follow on the size?

Good question

Hi Fan of Green

Those are great questions. Kevin has actually answered them over in the Ask Kevin FAQ. You'll see it's the third question down.

Thanks!

Homebuilding Green

This is a fascinating approach - I'm very interested in green building.  My major concern is the cost factor.  I am very familiar with homebuilding - the Steel "I-beam" construction used on the home in the video is out of the budget of 95% of consumers.  Are we really building green if John Q. Public can't afford these homes?

I love it!

The new site is looking great you guys - kudos! Thank you for your work and helping to make this world a better place for all of us. I am a newbie to green building but am looking forward to learning and growing with you, and cannot wait until the release of your full season!
