Hello Fellow Green-Beins'
The recent blog posting by Myleenjan, regarding SIPs panels, has sparked me to toss out a question towards those ears bent in my direction.
Without giving much of anything away in the way of design, to protect possible future patents? Conceptually, I've been formulating a SIPs panel design that is almost 100% organic materials. Once the product passes the R&D phase, testing, and to the market. It should quickly become an inexpensive, lightweight system not reliant on the use of petrochemicals in the production of a foamcore center. Such a panel system could greatly benefit the rebuilding process in the wake of hurricane Katrina. As well as, generate an income stream for many of the same individuals in those effected areas.
Where I've been running to brickwalls, in my web searching concerns the sheathing material. Wishing to avoid OSB wood fiber chip board. I've been searching for a commercial producer of compressed straw sheathing material. So far, I've only found products like StrawMit, that is a solid core panel system of their own. Most other leads I've run across have lead to suppliers that for one reason or another, are no longer producing straw-board. Someone, out there has to be, if it's being used as replacement material for fiber-board in kitchen and bathroom cabinet production?
So, if anyone knows of such a producer that I've yet been able to find in my seemingly feable attempts of searching... -I'd sure like to know! Thanx, in advance!!
Regards,
Mark a.k.a. "Spuds"

Straw board sheathing

I recently used some 3/8" thick "straw board" panels for floor underlay - it worked great. Also the
price ( about $12 CDN for a 4x8 ) was less than OSB or plywood. I think there are two mills in Alberta, and one in Saskatchewan making straw board in Canada. The above link mentions a mill in North Dakota.
Hope this helps, Bob
Straw board
Hi Bob.
I am looking for straw board as well.
Could you let me know where you boought it, or who manufactured it??
Thanks.

Wheatboard
Thanx, a ton Bob!
Read thru the link you sent, and will chase down others provided. I don't know if the exchange rate has changed drastically. But, in US bucks, that should be around $6.00 US. -Not considering transport costs, if not locally available.
But, thanx for coming thru with a valuable lead.. Now? If I can affordably get a small bundle of these panels in my hands to work with. I can begin experimentation on building my prototype total-green SIPs panels.
It's been non-stop mental torment, thinking thru all of the small detail items. That shoot holes in the basic concept. -Stuff like: How the panels join, adaptations for electrical and plumbing supply routes, specific panel construction forms to accomodate windows and doors. Plus, how the panels fit within a load baring post & beam structure.. I wish I'd been born an architect, or my best friend was!
Best Regards,
Mark

hey there, Mark. i've been
hey there, Mark. i've been building straw bale home in Ontario for 10 years now, and have a client who wants to use SIPS made of straw board. i notice you were talking about creating such a product...any luck?
many thanks!

Straw SIPs Panels
Hello Tina;
For the immediate future, the panel system concept is still in the design/development stages. And would appear to be stuck there for longer than your client/friend might wish to wait on my product. I have found an architect/engineer to enlist in some of the basic design drawings, and a source for the straw board. The trick is in finding the funding at this early stage to afford either.
I am reticitent to send interested individuals elsewhere... But? You might have your client/friend check into www.Agriboard.com . Their's is a laminated straw board SIPs panel (about 8" thick) that offers an R value in the upper twenties. Not what I hope to see in R value production from what I'm working on.. But, mine too may fall somewhat short of what a standard conventional straw bale would deliver...
Still plenty of hurdles to clear, before I can bring this to the wholesale/retail market.. -Like testing and building standards certification... Know anyone with a few spare million dollars, that's keenly in to sustainable greenbuilding??? Will report back later, have an appointment to keep for now..
Regards,
Spuds
Ecopanel
Hey What's up?
We are planning to enter Canadian market with a new product called Eco Panel.
Eco panel is organic product it means no chemicals at all.
We are in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
We are looking for partners and investors.

The standard straw-board mechanical and physical characteristics
Fire resistance
The straw-board doesn´t contain enough oxygen that would support burning. It differs from the other construction boards so that it doesn´t comprise any other adhesives, resins, alcohlic extracts, turpentines or other chemicals that evolve flammable vapours.
Firm and durable
The straw-boards have fair structural characteristics and can be used as self-contained partitions or as walls up to the height of three meters ( a horizontal lintel needs to be established with higher partitions). Futher they can be used as transversal ceilings, facings, ceilings, mobile partitions etc.
Deterioration resistance
The straw-boards can be familiarly handled, and they are not as easily damageable as gypsumcardboards when being transported or handled.
Outstanding heat-insulating characteristics
One of the biggest advantages of the straw-boards are their outstanding heat-insulating characteristics when comparing with other construction materials.
High level of soundproofing qualities
Excellent soundproofing is a result of the straw-boards´ thickness and density.
Ecological and recyclable materials
The length
It is possible to produce the straw-boards in the lenghts from 1 500 to 3 200 milimeters.
The width 1200 mm
The standard straw-board width is 1 200 milimeters.
The width 800 mm
The standard straw-board width is 800 milimeters.
The thickness
The standard straw-board thickness is 58 milimeters ( with a tolerance of +2, -0.5 milimeters).
The weight
The weight of a standard 58 milimeters thick straw-board varies from 19.8 to 26.4 kg/m². The weight of a board of 2 500 × 1 200 × 58 milimeters is about 67 kg.
The density
The straw-boards have usually the density of 379 kg/m³.
The heat conduction
The standard 58 milimeters thick straw-board doesn´t have heat conduction higher than 0.102 W/mK and heat resistance bigger than 0.56 m²/KW.
Diffusion coefficient
? = 13,1
The acoustical absorbing capacity
The standard straw-board restrains the noise level, from one side to the other, on average by 27 decibels, respectively in the broad frequency scale. In case of a pargeted straw-board it restraines the noise level by 30 decibels in the scope from 100 to 3 200 Hz.
The firmness
The straw-board without a deformation can bear the load of 981.3 MPa. The straw-boards can be used as self-contained partitions and as external walls without structural frames. They can bear traction tension in flexion of 0.1603 MPa.
