Vetting "green" building materials

We just found another good question in our inbox:

I have a question – is there a good site which can “vet” building materials?  I went to a show (“Building Green” convention) and I’d like to know if any of these products really have been used in buildings and if there is any feedback on them.

Vetting building materials

Hi Lee,

You can always give my friend, Steve Konstantino at Maine Green Building Supply a ring. www.mainegreenbuilding.com. He has alot of experience with real world applications of all sorts of building products. Good luck!

Lee, In the coming months we

Lee,

In the coming months we will be releasing a new site that has been in the works for close to three years that will attempt to do exactly as you describe. The address is green2green.org, although it is a beta currently and password protected, in a month or so it will be opened up and by November it should be totally operational. G2G will tell you (for free) not only what's in a green building product or material, it will tell you where to get it, where it came from, how to use, maintain and dispose of it, all drawn from the word on the job site from practicing experts. Until then the only place I know of to try is Building Green's GreenSpec, which will cost you a little to join. Stay Tuned, whit

Let me know about this site!

I am very interested in looking at this site when it is ready! We are in the process of building our green dream home as owner-builders (we manage our own custom build as opposed to hiring a General Contractor). Please feel free to go on my blog or write me e-mail at myleenjan at yahoo dot com

Hope to hear from you! Myleen
